Where do the default labor and materials catalog prices come from?
Electrical, Plumbing and Low Voltage prices are based on national averages from Craftsman National Estimator. These items are adjusted annually for accuracy.
Can you adjust the material pricing and labor factors?
Yes, you can adjust the material/labor pricing globally. Open the material database, locate the material item in question and adjust the material price/labor.
Can you adjust material pricing and labor factors on a single project?
Yes, you can adjust labor and material price/labor factors by simply adjusting the price/labor factors in the estimating step. This only saves those changes for the current project and does not impact global values.
How do you hide the default material database?
Go to your username in the top right-hand corner of the screen, click company profile. Under company profile, scroll down and check the box next to “Hide items from global catalog”. This allows you to display on the material databases you have created or uploaded and hide any of the default catalogs.
Can you import your own list of material with pricing and labor factors?
Yes, click your username in the top right-hand corner, under company profile, choose import material database. There is a sample database that you can use as a template to enter data in the correct format.
How do you adjust the “Hourly Labor Rate” used to calculate project?
The hourly labor rate is located on the estimate of a project and is adjustable on a project basis, by clicking in the cell and changing it accordingly based on the project and/or your standard “average hourly labor rate”.
How do you determine your company’s “Hourly Labor Rate”?
The “Hourly Labor Rate” is a blended crew average that includes burden (taxes, workmen’s comp, etc.). So for example, one foreman that makes $25 per hour with burden and one lower waged helper who makes $15 per hour with burden is an hourly labor rate of $20 per hour (25 + 15 / 2 = $20).
Can you set an hourly rate for a specialized subcontractor who is not on payroll?
Yes, we suggest setting up subcontractors as a line item with their hourly rate as the “Unit Cost” and the number of hours required for the task as the “Quantity”. You would then change the “Labor” to zero to avoid duplicating the labor in the project summary.
Can you include travel costs, per diem, hotels, etc. in your estimates?
Absolutely, we suggest using the same method as you would for subcontractors (outlined above). Enter the cost as a line item in the estimate and zero out the “Labor” field and use “Unit Cost” to include the expense and “Margin” to mark up the expense appropriately.
Why are there multiple “Linear” measurement types?
We included several customized “Linear” measurements types that automate otherwise manual calculations. These measurement types are specific to Low Voltage, Electrical and Plumbing contractors and allow the user to measure items, adjust the variables and the appropriate material quantity is entered in the estimate.
What is Linear Average with Drop?
This measurement type is specific to trades that install large quantities of low voltage cable runs and allows you to take sample measurements to calculate the average cable run length. The take-off type includes additional options to add “drop length” and multiply the average cable length times the number of cable runs to get your cable footage for the task.
What is Linear to Each?
This measurement type allows you to take a linear measurement and divide the total by the frequency in feet the item is installed. Example material items are cable tray, J-Hooks, ladder rack runway, conduit, etc.
What is the difference between “Linear” and “Linear with Drop”?
Linear is the measurement of length in feet and the quantity displayed is the sum of all measurements taken using the take-off. Linear with drop lets you add vertical drop distance at desired points on a set of plans i.e. a 20ft conduit run with two 10ft drops is displayed as 40ft of conduit.
How do you control various “Linear” measurements?
To begin a linear measurement, simply left click on the plan at the starting point of your measurement, every following left click allows you to turn 360 degrees and you can navigate around the plans with these simple functions. If you need to delete a segment or back up because you measured too far, simply hit the back space as many times as required. To end the measurement double click.
How do you add/remove drops while using Linear with Drop”?
Drops are added by a single left click, which is also used to turn 360 degrees while performing a linear measurement. While taking a measurement you’ll need to use a combination of left clicks and back spaces to remove unwanted drop locations i.e. if you intend to turn and do not want a “X” just hit the back-space key and continue measuring. Drop locations are depicted using an “X” and each one will be multiplied as “quantity” x “length”. The length is a variable adjusted under the take-off settings.
