New Year’s Resolution: Implement these Top Wiring Closet Makeovers

When you walk into your wiring closet to do a job, do you wish you could walk right back out again? You’re not alone! As you can see from this list of wiring closet winners and losers, there’s an epidemic of bad wiring going on.

Well we’ve got just what the doctor ordered with a list of our top wiring closet makeover suggestions to provide you with some deceptively simple solutions. Some of these take just a little time, but the rewards are significant with increased efficiency in the future.

  • Simplify things by removing items or old equipment from the closet that shouldn’t be there.
  • Look over your closet for reorganizational opportunities. Can you put in some shelves or move anything to better manage the space?
  • Using zip ties, clean up those wires. If you can replace one with a shorter wire, now is the time to do so. You’ll thank yourself later.
  • Label each wire, with a label on each end. For longer cables, add a label at intervals or where the wire reappears in another area of the closet.
  • Color-code your wires with colored tape next to the labels.

Once you’re finished, make a spreadsheet to list what wires you have and where they go. Keep it simple so if someone has to walk into your wiring closet, they can quickly determine what goes where and how to address any issues. Keep a copy of your spreadsheet on a clipboard in the closet and update it whenever you make a change.
